  • Overview


    The Million Veteran Program receives and stores large volume of genomic data for Veterans around the world. We are looking for a Python developer who will be responsible for writing scripts and applications to manage large amounts of genomic data.  This position is for an onsite developer at the Boston VA Medical center in downtown Boston.


    • Desire to solve complex problems employing JavaScript, Linux, PERL, Bash, HTML, Python, and Scripts; rapidly prototype software and potentially transform it into a production system
    • Work collaboratively with data scientists, comprehend project objectives, and evaluate and provide informatics solutions.
    • Develop and implement bioinformatics analyses, applications, and workflows to expand our genomics and bioinformatics capabilities.
    • Manipulate publicly accessible, commercial, or proprietary genomic, clinical-related databases.
    • Improve user interfaces to bioinformatics software and databases.
    • Work closely with IT specialists to build robust infrastructure. 
    • Collaborate with data management team to design, develop and improve processes for ETL and data transformation on structured and unstructured data


    • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical discipline; or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work/military experience
    • 2-3 years of Python experience is a must
    • 1-2 years of experience with Java Technologies
    • Understanding of software design patterns and effective development methodologies
    • Ability to work independently and multi-task effectively
    • Flexible and willing to accept a change in priorities as necessary
    • Ability to write unit tests, refactor existing code and work with existing codebases
    • Ability to handle more than one project concurrently
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
