Overview

The Senior Network Engineer serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) that provides data center, infrastructure, network, and communications technical leadership, guidance and recommendations; supports the data center support services requirements analysis process; performs reviews of Operations and Maintenance and PaaS contract deliverables; develops and maintains data center, infrastructure, network, and communications documentation and artifacts; and provides input to the IAM architects required to make critical decisions that define a specific direction for a system in terms of implementation, operations, and maintenance.


The Senior Network Engineer possesses specialized technical knowledge and skills that can assist the Data Center Manager in solving complex technical issues. Works closely with the Data Center government, PMO, and Operation and Maintenance staff to: create and distribute tailored views of the data center footprint; plan and execute infrastructure changes; and plan and execute sustainment work items which include operational troubleshooting, planned maintenance, improving system reliability/availability, and operational system patching.


The Senior Network Engineer works in concert with Technical Leads and Operations and Maintenance vendors to select the infrastructure design that is most appropriate to meet the business needs, satisfy user requirements, and achieve the desired results given the solution constraints; define important system details and significant constraints; support critical decisions that define a specific direction for a system in terms of implementation, operations, and maintenance; identify quantifiable objectives that encapsulate quality attributes of a system.

Responsibilities

The Senior Network Engineer responsibilities include:

  • Assist Data Center Manager in authoring requirements for IaaS and PaaS vendor contracts as directed
  • Support hardware and software installations, upgrades, and expansions as required to maintain IAM availability and synchronization with Enterprise Operations (EO) CMDB Configuration Item (CI) lists. Activities include:
    • Review disk space, memory, storage, and server performance report deliverables and proactively make recommendations for change.
    • Perform monthly Server Planning Sheet Technical Reviews (for all VHIC and AcS environments) and proactively make recommendations for change.
    • Develop presentations, diagrams, and documents to communicate data center/infrastructure capabilities
    • Guide and advise IAM Operations and Maintenance teams in environment infrastructure health alert monitoring and provide assessments as requested by the Data Center Manager.
    • Conduct technical reviews of monthly patching plan and ensure adherence to patching processes and procedures each month.
  • Perform Data Center tools analysis and recommendations for acquisition consideration by the Data Center Manager. Such tools can/should include:
    • Certificate (i.e., SSL) Expiration Management tools
    • System administration detailed dashboards
    • Executive-level systems health dashboards (i.e. developed for Sharepoint)
  • Support development of Operations and Maintenance Standard Operations Procedure (SOP) Library. To clarify, this would include:
    • Create Network Connectivity Diagrams (for VHIC, VAAFI, and ACS at both AITC and Terremark) as directed.
    • Author, update, and maintain between 8-10 (current and to-be-created) DEV and SQA lab SOP’s.
    • Periodically review and approve IaaS and PaaS vendor SOP’s
  • Lead Data Center team’s technical review of the following project documents:
    • SDD’s (AcS and VHIC)
    • OAP’s (AcS and VHIC)
    • POM’s (AcS and VHIC)
    • O&M Plans (AcS and VHIC)
    • System Monitoring Plan (AcS and VHIC)
    • Operations SLA’s and MOU’s (IAM-AITC, IAM/VA-Terremark, & IAM-PaaS vendor).
  • Assist in IAM Data Center Transition (Relocation) Project planning as well as produce technical responses to vendor questions about IAM systems and interdependencies as directed.

Qualifications

The Senior Network Engineer must have:

 

• At least 7 year’s experience managing multiple enterprise technical environments.
• At least 5 years experience Platform as a Service (PAAS) architecture and solutions.
• Enterprise understanding of data center services to include: hardware and software, hosting services, and network communications
• Leadership skills, initiative, and good judgment.
• Ability to work independently within a team-oriented environment
• Competency in MS Word, MS Visio, MS Excel, and MS Sharepoint.

 

Education:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electronics Engineering or other engineering or technical discipline is required.

• 8 years of additional relevant experience may be substituted for education

 

Desired Skills:
• Experience with Cloud Base data center services is a plus
